Nao (* 1987 in Nottingham ; actually Neo Jessica Joshua ) is an English alternative R&B singer.

Career

Neo Joshua grew up in east London and learned to play the piano as a child. She later began singing and took jazz singing lessons at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama . She graduated and worked as a singing teacher for several years.

She was also active as a background singer for Kwabs and Jarvis Cocker , among others , and sang in the girl group The Boxettes for six years . Eventually she started making her own music. From 2014 she published songs on SoundCloud . The song So Good got her a lot of attention on the net, it was played on BBC Radio 1 and was on the electronic charts on iTunes . She then got a label offer, but decided to publish on her own. Two EPs were released in 2014 and 2015 on their own label Little Tokyo . She was featured as a guest singer on the number one album Caracal by the DJ duo Disclosure , which made her even more popular.

At the beginning of 2016 she took 3rd place at Sound of 2016 , where the most promising newcomers for the new year are selected. For the release of her debut album she found a big label with RCA . For All We Know was released in July 2016 and debuted at number 17 on the UK album charts . It also hit the charts in the Netherlands, Belgium and Switzerland. In the US, Nao reached number 8 on the R&B and number 3 on the dance / electronic charts.

The second album Saturn was released in 2018. Commercially it lagged significantly behind the debut. For this it got a nomination at the US Grammy Awards in the category Best Urban Contemporary Album .
