The Naskaupi River or Meshikamau-shipu (the name of the Innu or the Naskapi ) is an approximately 250 km long river in the east of the Labrador Peninsula in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador belonging to the sub-province of Labrador . It is the second largest river in Labrador. It was named after the Naskapi who settled there, the eastern tribal group of the Innu.
River course
The Naskaupi River has its origin in Orma Lake below the levee of the Smallwood Reservoir . With the construction of the reservoir in 1971, the headwaters and the upper reaches of the Naskaupi River were flooded and separated from the rest of the river. The Naskaupi River flows in a predominantly easterly direction through the eastern part of the Labrador Peninsula . It flows through the lakes Marie Lake , Wuchusk Lake , Seal Lake and Naskaupi Lake . The Red Wine River joins the Naskaupi River on the right at kilometer 24. 2 km above the mouth, the Crooked River meets the Naskaupi River from the left. This finally flows into the western north shore of Grand Lake . This becomes over the short North West River to the inland bay Lake Melville (Innu: Atatshi-uinipek ), which represents a salty tidal extension of the Hamilton Inlet , in which also the Churchill River (Innu: Mishta-shipu , the western part / upper reaches of the Churchill River on the other hand: Patshishetshuanau-shipu ) flows off, drains towards it.
Hydrology
The catchment area of the Naskaupi River covers 15,082 km², of which 2391 km² are accounted for by the Crooked River, which meets the Naskaupi River from the left immediately at the mouth. Before the establishment of the Smallwood Reservoir and its dikes, this area was 23,310 km². The mean discharge at river kilometer 70 is 89.3 m³ / s. In June, when the snow melts , the river usually carries the greatest amount of water with an average of 280 m³ / s.
