Natalie Schafer (born November 5, 1900 in Red Bank , New Jersey , † April 10, 1991 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American actress in theater, film and television.

Life

She began her acting career in the 1920s on New York's Broadway . In 1933 she married the actor Louis Calhern ; the marriage was divorced in 1942. In 1941 she moved to Hollywood to get into the film business. In the following years she was seen mainly in supporting roles, including in Die Schlangengrube (1948), Gefangen (1949) and Anastasia (1956).

Her most famous role was that of snobby, but still warm millionaire wife Eunice Howell, called her husband "Lovey" in the CBS - sitcom Gilligan's Island (1964-1967). At the time, she kept her real age a secret as she was 13 years older than Jim Backus , her husband on the series.

Schafer was also a successful business woman, becoming a millionaire through her real estate business. According to contradicting rumors, she bequeathed her fortune either to her cat or to Dawn Wells , who played the country girl Mary Ann Summers on Gilligan's Island . In fact, not only did Schafer and Wells have a mother-daughter relationship of sorts on the show; Wells has not commented on the inheritance rumors to date.
