Nathan Gelbart

Norman Nathan Gelbart (born April 12, 1966 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a lawyer in Berlin and was chairman of Keren Hayesod Germany for ten years until 2016 (successor: Sammy Endzweig).

Life

career

Gelbart was admitted to the bar in Germany in 1996 and in Israel since 2014 . From 1996 to 2006 he worked in his Berlin joint law firm Gelbart & Nicklass . From 2006 to 2016 he worked for the business law firm Fritze Wicke Seelig in Berlin and Tel Aviv , from 2013 as a managing partner. During the same period he was the German chairman of Keren Hayesod Germany. Until 2014 he was also a member of the Supreme Arbitration and Administrative Court of the Central Council of Jews in Germany . Since 2016 he has been a partner in the Real Estate Law practice group at PricewaterhouseCoopers Legal . Gelbart is also a member of the European Jewish Parliament (EJP; formerly European Jewish Union - EJU) and wrote various articles in the journalist blog Achgut - The Axis of the Good and in the Jüdischen Allgemeine .

Prominent cases (selection)

As a lawyer, for example, he successfully represented TuS Makkabi Berlin against VSG Altglienicke in 2008 after Altglienicke spectators harassed anti-Semitic slogans against the Makkabi players at a game of the second teams. The dispute made headlines across Germany.

Currently (2017) he represents SV Babelsberg 03 (SVB 03) in a matter against the Northeast German Football Association (NOFV), the riots and the associated interruptions in a game of SVB 03 on April 28, 2017 against FC Energie Cottbus in Karl- Liebknecht Stadium preceded. Around 100 right-wing radicals were gathered in the guest block, stretching their arms in the Hitler salute and shouting “Work makes you free. Babelsberg 03 ”as well as“ Ticks, Gypsies and Jews ”rioted. An SVB 03 fan replied by shouting “Nazi pigs out!” And fireworks flew on both sides of the fan. Both clubs received fines, although that of FC Energie was considerably reduced after its protest. An appeal procedure at the request of SVB 03 was rejected by the NOFV because of an alleged formal error, as was a subsequent request to reopen the procedure.

Another headline hit is the case in which the airline Kuwait Airways rejected an Israeli as a passenger because of the controversial “Unified Law on the Israel Boycott” of the Emirate of Kuwait , who is represented by Gelbart in the proceedings before the Frankfurt am Main Regional Court .

In 2016, Gelbart defended Charlotte Knobloch in the trial of the Jewish publicist Abraham Melzer before the Munich I District Court , who she said was "downright notorious for his anti-Semitic remarks", whereupon Melzer had sued her for insult and defamation.

Gelbart is friends with Henryk M. Broder and represented him in a case brought against the publicist Evelyn Hecht-Galinski , which was dismissed by the Berlin Regional Court. She had called Broder a "porn writer". The process went down in legal history and the media reported widely.
