Nathanael Church with detached church tower: the right supporting column forms a cross with the plate of the bell carrier

The Nathanaelkirche belongs to the Protestant Nathanael parish in Cologne-Bilderstöckchen . The church, named after the disciple Nathanael , was completed in 1965 and in 1974 received its distinctive campanile , separated from the church building, directly at the intersection of Escher Straße and Parkgürtel .

history

The district of Bilderstöckchen belonged to the parish of Nippes until 1957, to the parish of Weidenpesch until 1962, after which it received an independent parish. The architects Jürgen Hartmann and Hans Berger built the parish center of the Nathanael parish with an integrated church on the property acquired in 1963.

architecture

Forecourt and church gable

The church and some of the meeting rooms and hall have a six-sided floor plan. The red brick community center with an integrated day-care center is dominated by the church's bent glass gable facade. The church forms the largest room in the complex and seats 300 worshipers. Wood and glass, metal struts and a large slate roof were used as design elements for the modern building with large exposed concrete surfaces . All buildings are connected by a funnel-shaped forecourt, which leads to the church entrance with a vestibule in front .

The striking bell tower, designed as a concrete sculpture with three tapering legs, carries the wooden bell cage on a square base plate, covered by a triangular cover plate. One of the legs forms a cross with the base plate .

In the simply designed interior, large exposed concrete walls and a wooden ceiling determine the colors. The floor plan is slightly stretched in the direction of the sanctuary, so that the altar, raised by two steps at the end of the central axis, forms the visual focus of the space. The altar itself, like the other essential furnishings of the church, was created by the artist Heinz Heiber. A filigree steel cross stands on the ox-blood-red cuboid .

To the side behind the pulpit , the only multi-colored element in the interior of the church is the mural “Meet Yourself”, symbolizing the relationship between people and Jesus Christ . On the other side of the altar, an exhibition of the wall and a lowered ceiling create a smaller room for the baptismal font and the baptismal font . The basin shows a Christ enthroned. The window behind the altar forms a square with twelve surrounding, nested smaller windows. This symbolizes the heavenly Jerusalem with the twelve city gates, but also Christ with his twelve apostles .

The organ was built in 1974 by Willi Peter. It is a Peter organ II / P with 8 registers.

Bells

The belfry has three bells , the bells of the Catholic Church of St. Francis (fis 1 -GIS 1 -h 1 cis 2 -e 2 ) are matched.
