Nathaniel Ramsey

Nathaniel Ramsey (born May 1, 1741 in Lancaster County , Pennsylvania Province , †  October 23, 1817 in Baltimore , Maryland ) was an American politician . In 1786 and 1787 he was a delegate for Maryland to the Continental Congress .

Life

Nathaniel Ramsey was, despite the different spelling of the surname, a brother of the historian David Ramsay (1749-1815), who participated in the Continental Congress for the state of South Carolina . He was also the brother-in-law of the painter Charles Willson Peale . In 1767 he graduated from the College of New Jersey , later Princeton University . After studying law and being admitted to the bar, he began to work in this profession. In the 1770s he joined the revolutionary movement. He was a member of several revolutionary bodies in Maryland and served in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War , where he rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel. At the Battle of Monmouth he was distinguished by particular bravery, but was wounded and was for some time a British prisoner of war. He was later released on a prisoner exchange.

After the war, Nathaniel Ramsey practiced as a lawyer in Baltimore. In 1786 and 1787 he represented Maryland in the Continental Congress. Between 1790 and 1798 he was US Marshal for Maryland. From 1794 until his death, he also worked for the federal government as a naval officer in the port of Baltimore. He died on October 23, 1817.
