National Catholic Reporter ( NCR ) is an American magazine with an authorship that sees itself as a Roman Catholic . It is based in Kansas City , Kansas . The publication has the ISSN  0027-8939 .

history

The publication was originally founded as a newspaper in 1964 , later appeared weekly and since 2009 biweekly.

In the 1960s, it was the first Catholic newspaper in the United States to condemn the Vietnam War . Over the years she stood up for women and others “marginalized in the Church”.

In October 1968, Bishop Charles H. Helmsing condemned the newspaper as a platform for heretical views. He had initially supported the editorial team.

In 1972 the magazine revealed that Pope Pius XI. 1938, as encyclical provided Humani generis unitas had commissioned, which was not published. National Catholic Reporter was informed by the former Jesuit Thomas Breslin and used documents from the estate of the Jesuit John La Farge for the reporting .

NCR was the first US magazine to write about the clergy sexual abuse scandal . The magazine reported on it from 1985 and was almost the only magazine devoted to this topic for at least five years. With their cover report in mid-1985 , Thomas C. Fox and Jason Berry broke a taboo. They came to the conclusion that the church leadership did not know how to approach the problem and too often guilty pastors were taken under protection. The topic then appeared in every weekly issue. Readers have accused them of wanting to destroy the Catholic Church. A Jesuit priest on the board of directors demanded that Fox be dismissed via a no-confidence vote. But no other board member joined and finally the priest resigned. The traitor shouts of the persons concerned only stopped when Jason Berry's book Lead Us Not Into Temptation ( Lead us Catholic priest and sexual abuse of children not into temptation. , 1992) for the Pulitzer Prize nomination.

NCR won the Catholic Press Association's General Excellence Award in the National News Publishing category every year from 2000 to 2007.

The journal's authors include Vatican expert John L. Allen , theology professor Richard McBrien , auxiliary bishop Thomas Gumbleton, and Benedictine Joan Chittister .
