National Park , sometimes referred to as National Park Village , is a village in the Ruapehu District of the Manawatu-Wanganui region on the North Island of New Zealand .

Origin of name

The name of the village refers to the Tongariro National Park , New Zealand's first national park , which was established in 1894 and on the western border of which the village is located.

geography

The village is located around 18 km northwest of the summit of the 2797  m high active volcano Ruapehu and thus on its northwestern foothills.

population

tourism

The dominant industry of the village is tourism. Numerous companies have settled here in order to provide equipment, hiking tours or accommodation for tourists. The village is the starting point for numerous guided tours and shuttle buses to the largest ski area in the country, Whakapapa , 15 km away , on the Ruapehu foothills .

Infrastructure

Road traffic

National Park is on New Zealand State Highway 4 , which passes the village on its east side in a north-south direction. At the southeast end of the village, the New Zealand State Highway 47 branches off from State Highway 4 in the direction of Turangi on Lake Taupo .

Rail transport

The village has a connection to the North Island Main Trunk Railway with a small train station . Almost 6 km to the north is the Raurimu Spiral , a stretch of the railway line in which the difference in altitude to the Central Volcanic Plateau is overcome by multiple tight loop loops .
