National Museum of Eritrea

The National Museum of Eritrea was founded in 1992 and is located in the capital Asmara .

Its mission is to research, document and present the history of Eritrea . One focus is on archaeological research and excavations . The focus is particularly on the archaeological sites of Adulis , Dahlak Kebir , Matara , Nakfa and Qohaito . Research is also carried out here in cooperation with foreign institutions.

After the collections were previously housed in other locations, they have been exhibited in the former school of the Comboni sisters since 1997 . The exhibition space is very small (2 rooms for archeology, a corridor with paintings about the Eritrean War of Independence , a room with preparations for animals , one room each for medieval Christian and Islamic history and two rooms with ethnological collection items - a showcase for each of the country's official ethnic groups) . The small size of the exhibition - only 10–15% of the collections are shown - is primarily due to the economic situation in the country and the few exhibition spaces available. There is also a collection of military vehicles from the War of Independence, which is parked in an area in front of the city.
