The Iriqui National Park ( French Parc national d'Iriqui , Arabic المتنزه الوطني إيريكي) was founded in 1994 with 123,000 hectares as a Moroccan national park .

Geographical location

The Iriqui National Park is located in southern Morocco between the Wadi Draa and the southern foothills of the Anti-Atlas in the provinces of Zagora and Tata .

Flora and fauna

The park is characterized by a desert landscape typical of southern Morocco. The vegetation consists of steppe and savannah forested with acacias . Some areas are overgrown with tamarisk trees.

In the rainy season, Lake lriqui temporarily becomes a marshland and provides a resting or wintering place for migratory birds, including flamingos , coots and geese , which gives the park great ecological importance. Restoring and protecting the wetlands were among the main goals when the park was established.

There are Dorcas gazelles , African ostriches , barbels , oryx , hyenas and collar busters in the park . Reptiles such as lizards , monitor lizards , chameleons , geckos and snakes also live there .

population

Apart from a few families who have their permanent residence in the park, the majority of the population lives nomadically . Especially in the area between M'hamid El Ghouzlane, Figuig and Tan Tan, the nomads operate a migrant livestock farming in which the cattle are not stabled or only stabled seasonally. The lriqui area is a preferred pasture for them.

tourism

The diverse landscape and the cultural heritage of the region give the park good potential for ecotourism, which is an important basis for local business development. In addition, the park fits into the development plan of the deep south of Morocco, with connections to Merzouga , Zagora , M'Hamid El Ghouzlane , Foum Zguid , Tata , Guelmim and Tan Tan . There has been a remarkable increase in exploration and adventure tourism in this area, which is making the Saharan regions more economically important.
