Tata (province)
The 25,925 km², but only about 130,000 inhabitants province of Tata ( Arabic إقليم طاطا, Taschelhit ⵜⴰⵙⴳⴰ ⵏ ⵟⴰⵟⴰ ) has belonged to the Souss-Massa region since 2015 (previously to Guelmim-Es Semara ) and is located in southern Morocco on the border with Algeria . The capital of the province is the city of the same name, Tata .
geography
location
The one on the south side of the Anti-Atlas province Tata location bordered to the southeast by Algeria , the southwest by the province of Assa-Zag , on the west by the province of Guelmim , in the northwest of the province of Tiznit , on the north by the Province of Taroudant , in the northeast of the province Ouarzazate and to the east to the province of Zagora .
landscape
The landscape is characterized by the southern foothills of the Anti-Atlas Mountains with its partly flat, partly hilly terrain. While in the higher elevations - apart from a few oasis valleys - rocky landscapes predominate, the plains are littered with stones.
climate
In summer, the daily maximum temperatures can reach 45 ° C and more; at night it cools down to 5 to 15 ° C, depending on the cloudiness. In the four winter months from November to February it can sometimes rain a bit, but the daytime temperatures still reach values around 25 to 30 ° C; at night the thermometer drops to values between 0 and 10 ° C.
population
The vast majority of the population are Berbers ; Many of them have left their home villages since the 1970s - due to the lack of rain, but also for socio-cultural reasons - and moved to the steadily growing cities in the north and west of Morocco. As a result of the emigration, the population of the province hardly changes and in 2004 was 121,618 people.
economy
The province has no industry. The population lives mainly from transfer money from migrants as well as from the oasis economy , from small crafts, retail trade and a little tourism. Animal husbandry does not play a significant role. There are notable deposits of gold, lead and copper that are also mined.
water
An extremely dry, almost desert-like climate prevails all year round. There is hardly any precipitation in the entire province. The vital water is pumped up from wells. The underground water supplies are replenished - albeit only partially - by seepage water from the mountainous regions of the Anti-Atlas. As water consumption is constantly increasing, supply problems are emerging.
Attractions
Apart from the barren, but impressive landscape with its date palm oases, which are far apart from each other, there are almost no historical sights. Only the rock drawings ( petroglyphs ), some of which are 6000 years old, but can only be found with the help of local guides, and the stump of a minaret in the vicinity of Akka, possibly from the Almohadic period, should be mentioned . The remote town of Aït Kine with its 'city gate' and its storage castle ( agadir ) is well worth seeing, and it also belongs to the province of Tata.
Biggest places
Only the places marked with M ( commune municipal ) are classified as urban settlements; the rest are considered rural communities ( communes rurales ) with several villages.
