Sodium phosphide (more precisely trisodium phosphide ) is an inorganic chemical compound of sodium from the group of phosphides . In addition to Na 3 P, two other sodium phosphides are known: sodium diphosphide Na 2 P and Na 3 P 11 .

Extraction and presentation

Sodium phosphide can be obtained by reacting sodium and red phosphorus under argon .

properties

Sodium phosphide is an extremely air-sensitive red solid. It has a hexagonal crystal structure with the space group P 6 3 / mmc (space group no. 194) . This consists of two structural elements: a graphite-like NaP layer, which alternately contains Na + and P 3− and thus has a negative overall charge, and corrugated layers of Na + ions that separate the NaP layers from one another.
