The Naturnser Hochjoch is a mountain in the access ridge of the Ortler Alps . Its height is given as 2443 m slm or 2474 m .
Location and surroundings
The Naturns Hochjoch is located in South Tyrol ( Italy ) and separates the Vinschger community of Naturns from the Ultner St. Pankraz . This is the last significant elevation in the Zufrittkamm, which runs from southwest to northeast, before the chain drops off to the long and largely wooded ridge of the Vigiljoch . To the southwest, the Hochjoch is separated from the Naturnser Hochwart by the Nörderscharte ( 2372 m ) .
The different heights are due to the fact that there is no really distinctive summit between the Nörderscharte and the drop of the ridge, but a series of peaks, and the alpine literature and maps locate the exact position of the Hochjoch at different points.
Alpinism
The Hochjoch is often viewed as the pre-summit of the Hochwart and is accordingly rarely visited in summer. The summit is also not accessed by a marked trail.
The Hochjoch is known as a worthwhile destination for ski tourers and snowshoe hikers in winter , because the ascent to Hochwart over the Nörderscharte is classified as tricky at this time of the year. The Vigiljoch is usually chosen as the starting point for winter ascents. The ascent over the long and only gently rising ridge and finally the somewhat steeper east ridge is considered easy and largely avalanche-proof .
