The Bandama Natural Park ( Spanish : Monumento Natural de Bandama ) is a protected landscape area in the northeast of the island of Gran Canaria , in the Spanish province of Las Palmas . It consists of two clearly defined units: the mountain peak Pico de Bandama ('Peak of Bandama') and the Caldera de Bandama (' Caldera of Bandama').

geography

Position and extent

The reserve is located about ten kilometers south of the city of Las Palmas and covers a total area of 325.7  hectares . Of this, 264.8 hectares are in the municipality of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria , 51.4 hectares in Santa Brigida and 9.5 hectares in Telde . The nature park essentially consists of the 574 meter high Pico de Bandama peak and the caldera to the south of it. This has a diameter of around one kilometer and is 170 meters deep.

traffic

The summit can be reached via a paved serpentine road. Another asphalt road leads to the edge of the caldera. A footpath paved only for the first few meters is the only access to the bottom of the boiler.

geology

The volcanic processes that led to the formation of the Bandama Complex have been dated by geologists to the later Holocene and are therefore considered evidence of recent volcanism in the Canary Islands. The caldera in its current form was created by smaller pyroclastic eruptions and the resulting collapse of the cinder cone about 5000 years ago.

history

Origin of name

The name Bandama is not of Spanish origin. It is derived from the Flemish trader Daniel Van Damme, who ran a very successful winery in the caldera in the 16th century . This man's will is the first written documentation of viticulture in this area of the island. The wine presses that are still partially preserved today and the associated fermentation basins ( lagares ) in which the grapes were mashed are among the oldest of their kind on Gran Canaria.

Archaeological finds

In the north wall of the caldera there is a cave village from pre-Hispanic times. The so-called Cuevas de Bandama (also known as Cuevas de los Canarios ) essentially consist of a storage silo with attached residential caves. These were equipped by the Canarian natives, the Guanches , with stairs, chambers, windows and corridors and thus developed into a cave settlement. This site is remarkable in that caves with artificial interiors are found nowhere else in the Canary Islands, except on Gran Canaria. Also worth mentioning are the so far undeciphered petroglyphs above a cave entrance, which, together with similar finds on Gran Canaria and other islands, suggest the existence of an old Canarian script with Libyan-Berber characteristics. The Cuevas de Bandama can only be reached with local knowledge. They are neither signposted nor is there a feasible way to get there at first glance.

Tourist use

The most popular place in the nature park for excursion guests is the viewing platform at Pico de Bandama , with a view of the crater, the Canarian mountains and the outskirts of Las Palmas and Telde. Another platform within the caldera, with a multilingual information board about the geological history of the volcanic complex, is also very popular. The hiking trail into the caldera basin is rarely used by tourists, as the ascent is very strenuous due to the steep terrain and loose soil.
