Bielstein Gorge and Bielstein Cave

Bielstein Gorge

The Bielstein Gorge is a collapse doline . It is about 300 m long and runs crescent-shaped from southwest to north. The walls are made of light, strongly fissured limestone and rise up to 15 m. In prehistoric times it served as a place of refuge and settlement.

In the rear part of the gorge is the approximately 42 meter long Bielstein Cave. The cave is designated as a ground monument . Bats live here, for example the pond bat and the great mouse-eared bat . The cave is therefore not allowed to be entered from September to May.

Hatch hole

The hatch hole is a 26 meter deep, funnel-shaped cave. It was created when the limestone was dissolved by rainwater. The cold air collects in the cave, making it ideal winter quarters for bats. Access to the hatch hole is blocked. Like the Bielstein cave, the hatch hole is also entered as a ground monument in the list of monuments of the town of Horn-Bad Meinberg.

flora

The beech forest in the nature reserve has larger occurrences of woodruff and wild garlic . Furthermore, in the area of the gorge, the onion-tooth root and various ferns, including the deer tongue fern, can be found .
