The nature reserve The spit - spit on the bridge is a 9.3-hectare nature reserve in the north of the city of Worms . It includes a wetland in the area of a former arm of the Rhine . The statutory ordinance on protection was issued on September 26, 1985 by the district government of Rheinhessen-Pfalz .

Protection purpose

The nature reserve has been designated for species and biotope protection. The wetland with moats , reed beds , sedges and wet meadows serves as a resting place for rare bird species. According to the biotope mapping in 2007, there are three plant communities in the area : Phalaridetum arundinaceae , Phragmition australis , Cicuto-Caricetum pseudocyperi .

The character of the area largely corresponds to the condition of the Altrheinrinne before 1936, when a general drainage plan established the drainage of the area in order to gain agricultural land. Since the arable land obtained at that time was still affected by waterlogging in the event of high groundwater levels or heavy rain events, the areas adjacent to the nature reserve were withdrawn from agricultural use and the sea ditch renatured from 2002. In total, around 20 hectares of former arable land in the Rheindürkheim district are used for biotope protection.

The nature reserve is also a part of the landscape conservation area Rheinhessisches Rheingebiet .

location

The roughly rectangular area lies north of the Rheindürkheim district in a silted-up arm of the old Rhine. The Seegraben , which branches off from the Seebach and drains via Eich to the Rhine, runs on its southwest side . Immediately north of the area is the Mückenhäuser Hof .
