The Goldau is a nature reserve in Neustadt an der Donau in the Lower Bavarian district of Kelheim in Bavaria .

The nature reserve (NSG) is located about 2 kilometers west of Neustadt an der Donau. It is part of the Donauauen fauna-flora-habitat area between Ingolstadt and Weltenburg .

description

The approximately 25 hectare area is a former oxbow lake of the Danube . From the aerial perspective, the half-moon shape of the oxbow lake can be seen. Until the regulation of the Danube in the 19th century, the NSG was part of the Danube bed. The former slip-off (inner curve) is now covered by the former flat meadows and shore impact (outer curve) represents the backwater is. Millennia was the downstream Donaudurchbruch at the annual floods a back banked-bottleneck. This led to strong landings and thus to a slight gradient with frequent changes in the course of the Danube, Abens and Ilm . In doing so, river loops were separated from the bed again and again and the habitat of the oxbow lake was created. The river dykes built around 1950 now exclude the Goldau from major periodic floods. Nevertheless, the NSG is a valuable floodplain landscape with floating leaf companies. Parts of this landscape are used as floodplain meadows and their preservation requires maintenance through an annual mowing . You can find a diverse animal world, reeds , the white water lily and dragonflies here .

The nature reserve was designated as an NSG on April 1, 1984.
