The nature reserve Höhle am Kattenstein is a 0.38 hectare nature reserve (NSG) east of Kallenhardt in the urban area of Rüthen in the Soest district in North Rhine-Westphalia . In 2004 the district government of Arnsberg designated the area as a NSG by ordinance. In 2004 the cave was designated as an FFH area of ​​the same name (No. DE-4516-303). The cave is located on the eastern outskirts of Kallenhardt.

Area description

The NSG is a cave that is not open to tourists. Specialized, cave-dwelling species live in the cave. There are Niphargus aquilex , a species of amphipod, and Proasellus cavaticus , a species of cave louse.

The cave is located in the so-called mass limestone from the upper Middle Devon . The cave is 209 m long. The entrance to the cave is at the foot of a vertically sloping rock wall in an abandoned quarry . The cave is located on the northeast-facing, flat slope of the Schlagwassertal in the area of ​​a mosaic of grassland and fields.
