The Hamorsbruch and Quellbach nature reserve is a 307.12  hectare nature reserve (NSG) south of Warstein in the Soest district in North Rhine-Westphalia . In 1942, 1954 and 1966 the Arnsberg district government designated the area as a NSG by ordinance. The NSG borders directly on the district boundary. The Hamorsbruch (Meschede) nature reserve and the Bormecker Bachtal nature reserve border directly on the urban area of Meschede in the Hochsauerland district . The NSG has been part of the FFH area of the same name (No. DE-4515-301) with an area of 464 hectares since 2004 .

Area description

The NSG consists of birch bog forests rich in peat moss, natural streams and structurally rich beech forests. Numerous spring streams are formed on the moor-like soils in the area of the moor forests. These streams feed the Bermecke and the Bilsteinbach , two rivers that have all the structural elements of near-natural rivers of the low mountain ranges. The herbaceous layer of the bog forests is rich in species. Alder forests are present in the area of spring horizons. The western part of the NSG comprises an approx. 1,000 meter long section of the Bermecke and the eastern area comprises an approx. 2,000 meter long section of the Bilsteinbach . The near-natural, unspoilt brooks have a meandering course and are accompanied by species-rich alder forests that z. T. falter on boggy soils. The bog forests are dominated by the bog birch , which grows on peat bodies up to two meters thick. The stagnant spruce stands in the area are loosened up by smaller, swampy black alder forests.

Protection purpose

The NSG is intended to protect the peat moss-rich birch bog forests, the near-natural streams and the structurally rich beech forests. As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
