description

The Lengwiler Weiher nature reserve is located southeast of the center of Kreuzlingen. This nature reserve consists of streams crossed by forests and low moors . The area around the Lengwil pond is particularly rich in species thanks to its traffic-free, quiet location and careful maintenance. This terrain provides habitat for many aquatic plants, amphibians and water birds. In the middle of the area is the Pro Natura hut. Many trips and excursions  from Pro Natura Thurgau are started at this hut and enable natural history on site: ponds, moors, wet meadows , forests, streams and ponds become a lively classroom. You can also explore this area yourself on the hiking trails , but it is important that you stay on the trails so as not to damage the nature reserve and thus the habitat for the most varied of species.

Origin and history

The Lengwil pond was originally dammed artificially by monks . These monks, who came from the island of Reichenau , mainly used the dammed water to breed carp . The water power of the streams (for example the Krebsbach) was used for the monastery mills . In order to ensure the inflow , a mill pond was created at each mill. Since the water flow of the stream was no longer suitable for regular mill operation, the water was held back in higher-lying reservoirs. If necessary, this water was drained into the mill pond. The Lengwil ponds were therefore the remnants of a reservoir system. The majority Weiher was passed through a embankment transversely to ravines formed. The water flowed through a pipe under the dam into the lower Pfaffenweiher. Today, however, this pipe connection no longer exists. This pond, like the Neuweiher, receives its water from the overflow of the large pond. From the late Middle Ages to the middle of the 20th century, the community of Kreuzlingen used the ponds as a water reservoir and as a source to operate a water mill . Later , the plan was to use the pond as a waste pit , but this plan was prevented at the last second and ultimately led to Pro Natura Thurgau being able to acquire the ponds and the surrounding area with the help of the Canton of Thurgau , the federal government and the city of Kreuzlingen .

Flora and fauna

The Lengwil pond is the habitat for common pond plants, for various amphibians and other aquatic life . The Lengwiler Weiher nature reserve is also inhabited by frogs , grass snakes , beavers , common terns and dragonflies . The Lengwil pond is overgrown with a variety of plants, including orchids and irises . Amphibian species that have become rare, such as the crested newt or the filamentous newt, use the pond in the nature reserve as a habitat. In order for these residents to continue to feel at home, new ponds are occasionally created and the ponds are renatured. Not only the amphibians benefit from these activities, but also the extremely rare dragonflies, which are also dependent on the shallow waters.

From the point of view of biodiversity, the Neuweiher is the most important biotope of the Lengwil ponds. The Neuweiher is one of 21 flat moors in Thurgau. The local fauna and flora as well as geomorphological foundations are protected by the preservation and regeneration of the Neuweiher.

In 2010 a beaver was sighted again after two centuries. The exact return of the beaver cannot be dated. In Bommer Weiher who live rodents since 2002 and are also likely to come from there to Lengwiler pond.

Many animal and plant species to be found near the Lengwil pond are threatened, such as the Siberian winter dragonfly .

Pro Natura Thurgau

The Lengwiler Weiher nature reserve is the largest protected area owned by Pro Natura Thurgau. Pro Natura Thurgau has been around for over 50 years, since then Pro Natura Thurgau has been committed to the preservation of the cultural landscape, to the protection and promotion of threatened animal and plant species. Pro Natura Thurgau has several nature reserves that they maintain and specifically upgrade so that rare plants and animals find ideal conditions. In addition, Pro Natura Thurgau is repeatedly involved in politically relevant environmental issues. Pro Natura conducts many educational excursions on topics such as environmental protection at the Lengwiler Weiher. The starting point is the Pro Natura Thurgau Hut. This is located next to the large pond.

The operating group "Pro Forst" is a community that is responsible for the management of certain forests and the provision of services for the benefit of others. Pro Forst was founded in 2000. Pro Forst includes 427.22 hectares of forest, which are distributed among 4 forest owners: Schuppiskorporation Emmishofen , Bürgergemeinde Bottighofen , Bürgergemeinde Kreuzlingen and Staatswald Kreuzlingen . The Lengwiler Weiher is also part of the forest for which Pro Forst is responsible. In addition, the forest house Bärenhölzli from the Pro Forest Community is located in the forest part of the Lengwil pond. The Bärenhölzli can be booked to hold company events or other events.
