Nature reserve |
The Bommer Weiher are a series of former fish ponds near Alterswilen ( Kemmental municipality ) south of Kreuzlingen in the Swiss canton of Thurgau . They lie in a gentle valley basin at an altitude of 530 m above sea level and extend over around 16.5 hectares. The name comes from the hamlet of Bommen , a collection of a few houses south of the water.
description
The small lakes belong to the hydrological source area of the Furtibach , which they flow through from east to west. Despite their artificial arrangement, they developed into a natural gem. The ponds provide habitat for many aquatic plants , amphibians and water birds . Today the area is a popular recreational destination for people from Kreuzlingen and the surrounding communities. Although the small bodies of water can no longer be used, fishing is still permitted to a very limited extent. A hiking trail leads through the area and allows you to observe the rich flora and fauna. The ownership of the Bommer Weiher is divided equally between private individuals, the canton of Thurgau and the nature conservation organization Pro Natura .
Origin and history
The pond landscape of Bommen was created by human hands. A book of documents from the parish of Alterswilen shows that three ponds were artificially created on a meadow that belonged to the Bommen court in 1460 at the behest of the large hospital in Constance. In the population of the surrounding communities it is also said that the Bishop of Constance gave the order.
The Bommer Weiher were used for commercial purposes for operating mills and for fishing. Since nature developed optimally in and around the waters, the area was placed under nature protection. In 2003, a third of the property was bequeathed to the nature conservation organization “Pro Natura”, which is still trying to preserve the ponds today. In 1979, the ponds were restored to an excessive siltation prevention. Today it is an important local recreation area in the region.
Flora and fauna
The Bommer Weiher are habitat for all common pond plants, amphibians and other water dwellers. There are tree frogs , newts , common toads , grass snakes , bitterlings , rare birds such as water rails , reed warblers , pond and swamp reed warblers and rare dragonfly species.
