The Vossnacken nature reserve (sometimes also spelled Vossnacken ) is an almost 20 hectare nature reserve in the northeast of the North Rhine-Westphalian city of Herne .
The area is very irregularly delimited. The largest extension in north-south direction is about 500 meters from the bridge of the Emschertalbahn over the street Vossnacken to the southernmost point north of the Castroper street in the middle between Vossnacken and the bridge over the Sodinger Bach . In a west-east direction it is about 850 meters from Sodinger Bach to Dorfstraße between Belmers Busch and the embankment of the Emschertalbahn. A north includes the conservation area until the arc of the Emscher Talbahn. A former dam runs from west to east across the area in the former course of the Emschertal Railway from today's Hunbergstrasse to the Börnig stop . The nature reserve was set up in order to preserve the moist to wet forest areas, some of which are very old beeches and the habitats of endangered amphibians , insects and birds.
By subsidence , a has wetland formed an approximately three and a half thousand square meters large lake is at its deepest area.
The landscape protection area to the north is largely used for agriculture. Farm roads run along the Sodinger Bach, another part is fallow and is covered by forest. The street Vossnacken, which used to connect the Josefinenstraße over the Cologne-Mindener railway line and under the Emschertalbahn with the Castroper Straße, has been made a dead end from the Castroper Straße. The former road bridge over the Cologne-Minden railway line has been replaced by a sidewalk bridge, so there is no longer any car traffic in the nature reserve.
