The nature reserve Langeloh - In der Hemke is a 40.20 ha nature reserve in the southeast of Hernes , it is part of the regional green corridor E, which runs in a north-south direction . Because of its location in the Ruhr metropolitan region , it is important on the one hand as one of the protected areas there in densely populated areas and on the other hand as a recreational area. It was designated as a nature reserve in the 1990s. The landscape-defining element is the Roßbach , which flows through the valley from southwest to northeast. After being canalized in concrete dishes for a long time, it was renatured in the 1980s and has since provided a habitat for many aquatic organisms again, such as B. the fire salamander .

In the valley of Roßbaches one finds abandoned grasslands , Hochstaudenfluren and large sedge Riede . In the bank zones z. B. Giant horsetail ( Equisetum telmateia ), panicle sedge ( Carex paniculata ), bank sedge ( Carex riparia ), knotty hedgehog ( Sparganium erectum ), cowslip ( Primula elatior ) and marigold ( Caltha palustris ). The panicle sedge forms bulbs up to one meter high there. Beech forests can be found on the slopes of the upper reaches, some of the red beeches are around 160 years old. There are small woodpeckers , tree falcons , hawks and stock doves, some of the endangered species that justify the protection status. In the central valley area, which is shaped by Gley , the Großseggenriede and sedge swamps can be found on permanently wet soil. You can enter the area on a nature trail marked with wooden posts, the 4.8 km long "Langeloh Nature Trail".

At a regional GEO day of biodiversity, organized by the Bochum Botanical Association in 2008, a total of 810 species of plants, animals and fungi were identified in the nature reserve within just 24 hours, 23 of which are on the Red Lists.

Development planning

Forestry planning aims to remove non- local tree species such as gray alder and sycamore maple , or non-autochthonous species such as hybrid poplar or North American red oak, and to replace them with local species that are more appropriate to the location.
