history

The Physical Society was established as the first scientific association in Bremen in 1776 . This was a reading society , at the same time they wanted to set up a natural history cabinet. In 1783 it was renamed Society Museum .

On November 17, 1864, 77 citizens interested in natural science founded the Natural Science Association of Bremen under the pharmacist Georg Christian Kindt . They wanted to disseminate scientific knowledge through events and publications and promote funding, particularly in north-west Germany. In 1865 it already had more than 250 members. The association participated in the founding committee of the association for the forestation of the Bürgerweide ( Bürgerpark ), in the establishment of the Municipal Museum for Natural, Ethnic and Commercial Studies , today's Übersee-Museum , as well as in the establishment and administration of the experimental station for bog, swamp and Heide , today's Soil Technology Institute of the Lower Saxony State Office for Soil Research .

In 1890 the association was in charge of the implementation of the 63rd meeting of the Society of German Natural Scientists and Doctors in Bremen. Among the club members are often excellent researchers, as Friedrich Hustedt (research on diatoms ), Walter Klie ( copepods ), but also Otto Leege which poses as an ornithologist , botanist and conservationist operated, Heinrich Schütte , of the history of the North Sea marshes explored that Mites researchers Karl Heinrich Viets and Carl Willmann.

During the period of inflation , the association lost its assets, which it had received through foundations. The Society for Racial Hygiene was incorporated as a specialist society as early as 1931 . In December 1933, the “ Führer principle ” was introduced with an amendment to the statutes , and in March 1946 it was repealed by a resolution of the general assembly.

After the war , working groups, working groups and specialist societies were founded, especially in the field of biology. Lecture series and excursions became an important part of the association's program. When Bremen University was founded in 1971 , many members of the university joined it. The endangerment of the environment, the destruction of the landscape and the decline of many plant and animal species have increasingly become a central part of the association's work. The association worked with the Übersee-Museum, the State and University Library , the Wittheit zu Bremen , the Geographical Society in Bremen, the Olbers Society and the Botanical Society of Hamburg.

Bremen Prize for Local Research

To mark the 90th anniversary of the association, the Senate of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen donated the Senate Prize for local scientific research in 1954 . Since the 1990s, the Natural Science Association, together with societies and associations of historians, prehistorians, geographers and folklorists , have sponsored this award as the Bremen Prize for Local Research , which is awarded as part of an event organized by the Wittheit zu Bremen.
