Hermann Cordes

Hermann Cordes (born April 18, 1931 in Bremen ; † December 3, 2014 in Bremen) was a German botanist , professor at the University of Bremen and nature conservation activist.

biography

Cordes studied botany and pedagogy and was later with a thesis on the landscape history of the Bremen block Lands Dr. rer. nat. PhD . As Borgfelder he campaigned for the local plants and birds in the post-war period and was active and well-known as a nature conservationist. He initially worked as a teacher in Bremen-Borgfeld and Rockwinkel. After 1970 he was appointed to the University of Bremen and held the chair for vegetation science and nature conservation . From 1974 to 1976 and from 1992 to 1995 he was the spokesman for the department of biology and temporarily vice rector of the university.

He made a significant contribution to the fact that the designation of landscape protection areas in Bremen increased considerably from the 1970s, when Albert Müller (SPD), as Senator, was primarily responsible for nature and the environment in Bremen (see list of landscape protection areas in the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen ) .

He became known in the 1970s / 1980s, together with Gerold Janssen , through the fight against the extensive development plans with a "Hollerstadt" in Hollerland in Horn-Lehe . The area is internationally important because of its biodiversity. The citizens' initiative for the preservation of the Hollerland achieved the preservation of the northern German cultural landscape. In 2004, the Westliches Hollerland nature reserve was the third largest in Bremen with 293 hectares. Cordes described the collaboration with his friend Janssen as follows: “We fought with different weapons. He with the mallet, I with the foil. "
