Gerold Janssen

Gerold Janssen (* 6. July 1923 in Borssum in Emden , † 18 March 2012 in Bremen ) was a German nature conservation - activist .

Life

Janssen graduated from school in Emden in 1941 with a secondary school diploma and trained as an aviator . At the end of the war he was taken prisoner by the US , but returned to his parents' house in August 1945. After training at a shipping company in Emden and an apprenticeship as a baker , he worked as a shipping agent in Hamburg from 1952. In 1962 he moved to Bremen, where he worked as an auditor at Fides Treuhand until 1984 .

Since the 1970s he has dedicated himself to nature and environmental protection. He founded several citizens' initiatives and fought since the late 1970s against the development of the Hollerland area in the Horn-Lehe district of Bremen, which is internationally important because of its biodiversity . From 1986 to 1996 he was on the board of the Bremen Deichverband on the right bank of the Weser .

Honors

Janssen was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit in 1993 for his work as an environmental and landscape protector. In protest against the conversion of the natural region “ Uni-Ost ” into a “concrete and stone desert”, he gave it back two years later.

On November 24, 2009 Gerold Janssen received the Bremer Sparkasse Citizens' Prize . The motto of the award is different every year, this time it was called "Environment". Janssen received 1st prize for his lifelong commitment to environmental protection, including for Hollerland - it is now a nature reserve - which he defended against building lions together with a citizens' initiative.

The Gerold Janssen road runs in the district of Horn-Lehe between the Leher Heerstraße and the road beside the Horner mill.
