The Eifel Nature Center is a supra-regional center for environmental education with an affiliated museum for natural history in Nettersheim in the Euskirchen district , North Rhine-Westphalia . It is operated by the community of Nettersheim and employs u. a. Geologists, biologists and archaeologists in the team. It records an average of 50,000 visitors per year (as of 2008).

history

The nature center was founded in 1989. First of all, an empty Winkelhof with the main house and adjoining auxiliary building was converted and used for the natural history exhibition with the associated laboratory and office space.

After the center became known nationwide and was no longer able to cope with the increasing number of visitors, a two-storey extension was built on the north side - in an ecological construction - the ground floor of which contains a foyer with an information stand, a museum shop and a small café. Further extensions in 2002 and 2005 provide space for an attached “wood competence center”.

In 2007, with advice and financial support from the Rheinisches Museumamt des LVR, a new design concept was drawn up for the house; The funding was extended in 2008 to the technical and content-related redesign of the exhibitions and funded by the LVR with a further 70,000 euros. The reason given was the “strong, independent overall offer for local, regional and national target groups in the areas of education, art and culture as well as nature and the environment”. Another sponsor of the facility is the NRW Foundation , which both provided start-up assistance and financially supported the new exhibition, which opened in 2009.

In 2014 a “ Roman Road Info Center” was set up, from which a circular route through the Archaeological Landscape Park , which opened in May of that year, starts.

Exhibition concept

The exhibition rooms are spread over four buildings in Nettersheim: the main building of the nature center, which also houses the tourist information center, a café and a museum shop, the old building and the “old smithy”, a farmhouse and the “work houses”. In addition, there is the outdoor area and local educational trails on nature, geology, archeology and culture, including places where fossils have been found .

In the main building there are exhibitions on archeology and settlement history of the region. A saltwater aquarium gives an impression of the Eifel in the Devonian  - as a coastal sea with a coral reef . The history of the settlement from the Stone Age to the early Middle Ages is presented on the first floor of the main building, with a focus on the Roman settlement that left numerous traces in Nettersheim.

Old Forge

In the old building, the exhibition on the first floor turns into a natural history museum with exhibits on the different habitats of the Eifel with typical plant and animal communities. In this area, the exhibition is particularly geared towards sensual perception, including a. with smells and sounds typical of the regional fauna and flora.

A neighboring farmhouse from 1896 with an attached farm garden shows the way of life in the Eifel at the end of the 19th century. The old smithy as another exhibition building is dedicated to geological history and palaeontology as the “House of Fossils” . In addition, there is a small excerpt from the industrial history of the Eifel with the factory houses , which used to belong to a lime works and which now have a historic grain mill .

One of the central tasks of the Eifel Nature Center is environmental education. “Understanding through experience” is part of the educational concept. In the workrooms, visitors can, for example, make their own paper or build nesting boxes . So-called “activity programs” are offered for school classes; in adult education we work closely with the Bildungswerk Nettersheim.
