The Naulila Memorial ( English Naulila Memorial ) is an official war memorial of the Republic of Namibia . It is located in the Outjo parish and was recognized as a National Monument on June 4, 1971 .

The memorial commemorates the 31 German soldiers of the protection force in German South West Africa who died in the battle for Naulila . It was presented to the public on June 12, 1933.

background

Shortly after the outbreak of World War I , on October 19, 1914, two German soldiers and the district captain of Outjo, Hans Schultze-Jena, were murdered by a Portuguese unit at the Portuguese Fort Naulila on the Kunene in Angola while negotiating a non-aggression pact.

In response, Major Victor Franke and his troops of around 500 men were sent to Naulila, which they attacked on December 18, 1914. Despite the numerical superiority of the Portuguese, the fort was conquered by Franke. About 160 Portuguese and 31 protection troops fell. Franke's regiment was renamed the "Naulila Regiment".
