The Pacific island nation of Nauru has participated in all eight Commonwealth Games since 1990 . Although the island, with around 10,000 inhabitants and an area of 21 square kilometers, is one of the smallest members of the Commonwealth of Nations , its athletes have already won 29 medals at the Games - all in weightlifting .
The island's participation in the Games is organized by the Nauru Olympic Committee , as in the Olympic Games .
history
Although Nauru had been a special member of the Commonwealth since its independence in 1968 , it was not until 1990 that the weightlifter Marcus Stephen became the first Nauru athlete to compete in the Commonwealth Games. He was able to win one gold and two silver medals in the class up to 60 kg. In 1992 he also became the first Nauruan athlete to compete in the Olympic Games - at that time still temporarily competing for Western Samoa .
In addition to the lower competition, the Nauruan weightlifters at the Commonwealth Games were also able to benefit from the fact that, unlike at the Olympic Games, there was not only one medal decision per weight class up to 2002, but also separate evaluations in the individual disciplines of snatching and pushing in addition to the duel were. At the 1994 and 1998 games, Marcus Stephen was able to secure all three gold medals in his weight class. In addition to other weightlifters, the Naurus team also included participants in other sports for the first time in those years, with a track and field athlete each for Nauru.
The Manchester Games in 2002 brought the Nauruan Association a record 15 medals. For the first time, women were also part of the Nauruan team, and weightlifter Reanna Solomon won the only two gold medals in these games for her country. Marcus Stephen had to admit defeat to the Australian Yourik Sarkisian in his fourth and last participation in the class up to 62 kg and won three silver medals.
Since 2006 there has been only one medal decision per weight class in both weightlifting and the Olympics. At the Games in Melbourne , the participants from Nauru remained without a gold medal for the first time after the end of Marcus Stephen's career. However, Sheba Deireragea won silver and Itte Detenamo won bronze. In Delhi 2010, Detenamo won silver and Yukio Peter gold - the tenth gold medal for Nauru at the Commonwealth Games. For the first time since 1998, the Nauruan team at these games did not consist exclusively of weightlifters: four boxers competed for the island, but with one exception ( Jake Ageidu ) they all failed in the first round.
In 2014 Nauru competed in Glasgow with a total of nine athletes in the sports of weightlifting, boxing and athletics. The only medal won Itte Detenamo as the runner-up in the men's weightlifting over 105 kg.
At the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast , Nauru competed with 16 athletes, the highest number of participants in the country to date. The team consisted of ten weightlifters and two wrestlers, boxers and track and field athletes. However, only one medal could be won, by the weightlifter Charisma Amoe-Tarrant , who came second in the 90+ kg weight class.
