Nea Roda ( Greek Νέα Ρόδα ( n. Pl. )) Is a coastal village in the municipality of Aristotelis in the Greek region of Central Macedonia . Together with two small coastal settlements, it forms the local community of the same name. According to the 2011 census, 1153 people live in Nea Roda all year round. During the summer months the number rises to 6,000.

Roda translates as pomegranate (Greek: Ρόδι, Rodi, pomegranate; Ρόδα, Roda, pomegranate) and refers to the many pomegranate trees in the vicinity of the original village of Roda in what is now Turkey. In the 'new' Roda, too, a noticeable number of pomegranate trees indicate the connection people have with their history.

The local community of Nea Roda extends over 16.319 km² on the isthmus between the peninsulas of Chalkidiki and Athos . Ierissos borders in the west, Ouranoupoli and an exclave of Ierissos in the east and an exclave of Ammoulianis in the south . history

At the time of the Persian Wars , the Persian great king Xerxes I. 480 BC. In the area of today's Nea Roda he built the 1,800 m long and 30 m wide Xerxes Canal in order to save his ships from circumnavigating the Athos peninsula. Ten years earlier, the Persian fleet, under the leadership of the general Mardonios, had suffered great losses in a storm near the Athos Mountains. Residents of the surrounding areas, mainly Akathos and Sani, were forcibly recruited to build the canal. It took about 3 years to build. The Xerxes channel has now silted up, but can still be seen well on satellite images.

According to a quotation from Herodotus, the canal served primarily as a show of power by Xerxes, since it would have been less expensive to let the fleet pull over land.

archeology

Archaeological investigations have been carried out in the area of Nea Roda since 1990, during which, in addition to a house, a temple shrine was brought to light. In archaic times this sanctuary belonged to the city of Sane, before it was later dated to 315 BC. The city of Ouranoupolis , founded by Alexarchus (brother of the famous Macedonian general Kassandros), was attached to it and expanded with other buildings, including monuments and a Hellenic temple.

traffic

The Ethniki Odos 16 between Thessaloniki and Ouranoupoli runs on the southern outskirts of Nea Rodas. The distance to Thessaloniki is about 115 km. Public buses of the KTEL -Chalkidikis network (ΚΤΕΛ Χαλκιδικής) serve the route to Thessaloniki several times a day.

population

Nea Roda was founded in 1923 on the area of the former Provlakas ('in front of the canal') by Greek refugees. As with many refugee settlements, the people of the lost homeland Roda (today's Narlı) have taken the name of their hometown into that of the new settlement and added 'Nea' ('new').

In the Church of St. Mary and St. Nicholas there is an icon of the Blessed Virgin, which the refugees brought with them.

Originally the inhabitants were mainly engaged in fishing and agriculture. Since the arrival of tourism in the region, it has represented the main income of the population.
