description

Nechamandra alternifolia is a submerged , perennial, herbaceous plant. The stems are thin, elongated and heavily branched. The leaves are alternate, but also opposite at the base of the stem and tightly tufted towards the end of the stem. They are 2 to 7 inches long, 1 to 1.5 inches wide, linear, with a pointed end. The midrib does not protrude and differs only slightly from the other parallel leaf veins.

The plants are diocesan , the flowers unisexual. Male inflorescences are stalked and consist of 60 to 100 flowers. The inflorescence axis is translucent. The spathe is about 5 × 4 millimeters in size, membranous-translucent, egg-shaped and with two columns at the tip. The male flowers are tiny. Their thin flower stalk is about 0.6 millimeters long. The three sepals are corolla-like, egg-shaped, white and transparent. The three petals are small and about the same size as the sepals. The two or three stamens are arranged opposite the sepals. The stamens are thin and about 0.3 millimeters long. The spathe of the female flowers is about 5 millimeters in size, tubular, sessile and has only one flower. The female flowers are similar to the male. The sepals are 0.5 to 1 × 0.4 to 0.7 millimeters in size. The ovaries are 5 to 10 millimeters in size, elongated, flattened and elongated at the tip into a beak. The three styles are edged at the tip and densely covered with papillae. The fruit is oval-elongated or linear. The seeds are numerous, elongated, and tiny.
