Nechbet (also Nechebet ) is a heaven and crown goddess in Egyptian mythology . In Greek mythology it is called Eileithyia .

meaning

Nechbet was originally just a local goddess in Necheb ( el-Kab ). The translation of its name “Die von Necheb” makes it clear why this ancient city remained its main place of worship later on. Over time, however, she gained more and more importance, became the goddess for all of Upper Egypt, and with this growing influence, other temples and places of worship also emerged for her all over Egypt .

Together with Wadjet , the country goddess of Lower Egypt , Nechbet is the patron goddess of the king ( Pharaoh ) and in the nebtin name (mistress name) of the Egyptian kings, both patron goddesses symbolize the united countries .

She is also considered to be the bearer of the Eye of Re and is equated in the Nutbuch with the goddess Sopdet , Hathor and Tefnut .

presentation

The goddess Nechbet is represented as a vulture or sometimes as a woman with a vulture hood or vulture head. As a constellation it is called Huret and at the same time equated with Neith . As an epithet she bears the title "The Secret".

In Dendera there is a picture of Wadjet and Nechbet, which shows Nechbet sitting on a papyrus plant.
