Ned Lagin (born June 11, 1949 in San Francisco , California ) is an American electronica - and avant-garde - keyboardist from the band Grateful Dead .

education

Although he was born in San Francisco, he grew up in New York , where he began to be interested in jazz. Lagin graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with the aim of becoming a biologist, which is where he graduated. Instead of biology, however, he then studied music, and in some cases he was also enrolled at the Berklee College of Music . During this time he began to develop and improve minicomputers and recording devices for studio and stage use. He also dealt with analog-digital converters and the processing of digital signals for musical use. This technique is sometimes used in the same way for synthesizers , which, however, had not yet been developed at this point in time.

Career

By chance, Lagin came into contact with the Grateful Dead. He wrote a letter to Jerry Garcia to which there was no answer. He later organized a Dead concert with friends at Kent State University , where he came into contact as an organizer with Garcia, who not only remembered the letter but also wanted to hear Lagin play.

" But then Kent State happened, we had organized the concert ... Kent State, May 1970 happened, and the Grateful Dead arrived that week. I remember Jerry pulling up to the motel and driving a station wagon. He jumped out and introduced himself and I introduced myself, and the first thing that Jerry did was run away. He ran down the parking lot yelling, “Phil! Phil! I found the guy! I found the guy! " "

He played live for the Deads from June 16, 1974 to June 17, 1975, with the first show taking place at State Fairgrounds in Des Moines , Iowa , and his last at the Winterland Music Theater in San Francisco. During this time he was present at thirty major performances and countless small appearances and jam sessions. He had separate appearances between the band's first and second set during this period. During this time he was often accompanied musically by Phil Lesh and Bill Kreutzmann . Occasionally Jerry Garcia also accompanied him on guitar. But already in the early 1970s he played in several appearances. During this entire period he was involved in several live and studio albums American Beauty and Grateful Dead from the Mars Hotel . He was also featured in the documentary The Grateful Dead Movie .

In addition to his time with the Grateful Dead, he also teamed up with Phil Lesh and completed several appearances outside of the Dead under the name "Ned Lagin and Phil Lesh". At the final concert they were supported by Garcia and Mickey Hart . During this time he also released his first solo album called Seastones , with the support of David Crosby , Spencer Dryden , David Freiberg and Grace Slick . The first edition under Grateful Dead Records was between 14,000 and 20,000 copies and sold out quickly. However, no LPs were re-pressed. For this, the album was re-released in 1991 by Rykodisc . This CD contains both the original album and a shorter live version of the album.
