Ned McGowan

Ned McGowan (* 1970 in Philadelphia ) is an American flautist and composer who is active in the fields of new music, jazz and world music.

Live and act

McGowan had first flute lessons at the age of nine with Gary Stotz , further teachers were Ray Fabrizio and Jacqueline Hofto at the Interlochen Arts Academy . He studied flute and composition at the Cleveland Institute of Music (with Jeff Khaner and Mary Kay Fink ) and at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music (with Tim Day ). In 1994 he moved to Amsterdam, where he continued his flute studies with Anne La Berge at the Conservatory and studied classical South Indian music ( Carnatic music ) with Rafael Reina . He also studied composition with Clarence Barlow and Martijn Padding at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague and attended classes with Louis Andriessen , Diderik Wagenaar , George Tsontakis and Syd Hodkinson . In 2007 he deepened his studies of carnatic music during a stay in India.

As a composer, McGowan combines influences from Western music with jazz and Carnatic music. With the solo piece for flute Moonrise he became a finalist in the competition for the Gaudeamus Prize , which he won the following year with the ensemble piece Melting Igloos . In 2004 he received the Henriëtte Bosmans Prize for the piece Tools . In 2008 the American Composers Orchestra performed a piece by McGowan for double bass flute and orchestra as part of the UNSafe program (with compositions by Anna Clyne , Jonathan Dawe , Charles Mason and Dan Trueman ).

In 1999 McGowan and Gijs Levelt founded the Carnatic Lab concert series and the Karnatic Lab Foundation , in the vicinity of which the ensemble for contemporary music Axyz , the jazz ensemble Spinifex Orchestra and his own quintet Hexnut emerged. From 2000 to 2005 he was director of the Huygens-Fokker Foundation for microtonal music.

In addition, McGowen has performed with ensembles such as Tonk , Bhedam , muzikFabrik , the Scapino Dance Company , Aka Moon , Weshm , the Gene Carl Band , the Beethoven Academy , Dreamtime and the Erie Philharmonic Orchestra . From 1996 to 1999 he was a flautist for the Aspen Contemporary Ensemble at the Aspen Music Festivals . In duo programs he appeared a. a. with Derek Bermel , Susanna Borsch , BC Manjunath , Gijs Levelt and Gabe Bolkosky .

As an interpreter of contemporary music, he has worked with composers such as Ofer Ben Amots , Louis Andriessen , Elinor Armer , Douglas Boyce , Elliott Carter , George Crumb , Kris Defoort , Brian Ferneyhough , John Harbison , Eugene Lee , Helmut Lachenmann , Eric Lyon , James Mobberly , Petros Ovsepyan , Bernard Rands , Jeffrey Stanek , Michael Torke and Mark-Anthony Turnage together.
