Gijs Levelt
Gijs Levelt (* 1973 ) is a Dutch jazz trumpeter and Klezmer musicians.
Career
Levelt studied from 1989 to 1997 at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam with Charles Green . He then attended master classes by Bobby Shew , Jimmy Owens , Peter Masseurs , Markus Stockhausen and Eric Vloeimans . Since 1995 he has also studied classical South Indian music ( Carnatic music ) with Rafael Reina and attended master classes with the singer Jahnavi Jayaprakash .
Since 1995 Levelt has led the jazz quartet Four Wheel Drive with saxophonist Wim Lammen , with which he a. a. toured Turkey and Slovenia. At the same time he was lead trumpeter in the Jazzmania Bigband by Peter Guidi , with whom he toured France, Germany, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Spain and recorded an album the following year. In 1996 he founded the Dutch Jazz Trio (with Fay Claassen and Vincent Koning ), with whom he went on a tour of Japan in the same year.
In 1997 he became a member of the Amsterdam Klezmer Band , for which he also works as a composer. He toured with the band through Turkey, Slovenia, Switzerland, Germany, England, Belgium, Italy and the USA and has recorded various albums with her since 1999, including a CD in 2003 in Istanbul with the Galata Gypsy Band from Edirne.
With the flautist Ned McGowen , Levelt started the concert series The Karnatic Lab in 1999 , with which he was a guest in New York in 2001. From 2002 he formed the duo Messing met PVC with McGowen , which plays a mixture of Balkan music, jazz and new music. The duo performed with the singer Martha Mavroidi in Bulgaria in 2003 and recorded a quartet album with the cavalry virtuoso Theodosii Spassov on the Bulgarian radio .
With the Bedham group (with Ned McGowan, Oene van Geel and Mark Haanstra ) Levelt undertook two tours through India with guests Jahnavi Jayaprakash , TS Seshagopalan , BC Manjunath and Udayraj Karpur . In 2002, the group's debut album Rickshaw Chase was released in Bangalore. With McGowan he also played in the quintet Hexnut , which appeared in New York City in 2007.
In 2002 Levelt played in the trio Fig Tree 3 with guitarist Timuçin Şahin and double bass player François Chanut . In the following year he founded the Deep Fried Angel Fish quartet with Theo van Tol (accordion), Tobias Klein (saxophone and clarinet) and Meinrad Kneer (bass) . He also belonged to the band Herb Spectacles , which also recorded some of his compositions.
