Neguac is a village in the Canadian province of New Brunswick . The place has 1678 inhabitants (2011).
geography
Neguac is located in Northumberland County on the Acadian Peninsula directly on Miramichi Bay . Miramichi is located around 40 kilometers southwest . The connecting road New Brunswick Route 11 runs through the town center.
history
The area was already inhabited hundreds of years ago by the Mi'kmaq Indians , who also gave the place the name Neguac , which means barren land (barren land) or badly situated (badly situated). When the Acadians settled North America around the 1750s, this region became part of the French colony of Acadia . Around 90% of the population still speak French today .
economy
The main livelihood of the inhabitants is the fishing industry. In particular, oysters , seasonal and lobster and smelts ( Smelts ) at fish markets and restaurant chains worldwide deliveries. Because of the considerable oyster exports, the place is also known as the Atlantic Canadas Oyster Hub . There is also a factory for the production of lobster baskets in the village . In the run-up to Christmas, Neguac is a center for the manufacture of Christmas wreaths , which are sold across the North American continent.
