The necropolis of Soderstorf is a unique cluster of prehistoric relics in the community of Soderstorf in the Lüneburg district in Lower Saxony .

The necropolis is located south of Wohlenbütteler Straße on the edge of the Luhetal . The square has been used by various multicultural societies for more than 2000 years. The complex consists of a large stone grave , a burial mound , stone circles , stone paving, the urn grave field and a flat grave .

The large stone grave and its subsequent use

The funnel cup culture (TBK) during the Neolithic Age between 3500 and 2800 BC. Megalithic complex with the Sprockhoff no. 682 was excavated in 1883. The west-east oriented system has a size of ten by three meters. There are four cap stones on the eleven bearing stones. The interior measuring 6.2 × 1.65 meters was covered by a mound up to the upper edge of the bearing stone. The entrance was off-center on the southern long side. The round hill, which was raised for subsequent burials during the Bronze Age , is surrounded by a stone wreath. The pavement made of pebbles was covered with granite.

The follow-up examination triggered in 1970 was able to prove a multi-phase use. Finds from the younger Funnel Beaker Culture from 3500 to 2800 BC Were only recovered to a small extent. In the meantime, finds from the time of the individual grave culture from 2800 to 2500 BC have been found in the chamber and its surroundings . Made from the re-uses of the large stone grave. The hill was remodeled in the early Bronze Age . The grave belonging to this redesign was probably destroyed undetected during the investigation of 1883. The bronze arm ring found at that time can be regarded as a grave goods . In the Younger Bronze Age, the hill was surrounded halfway up with a second, narrower stone wreath. In the mound, remains of corpse fire were found, which point to the common burial custom of this time.

Tumulus

South of the large stone grave lies a Bronze Age barrow with a stone wreath around the base of the hill. Detected soil discoloration points to two tree coffin burials . A paragraph were to additions hatchet and a needle from bronze found. There were other burial mounds in the area, but they have been destroyed.

Urn burial ground

An urn burial field from the early pre-Roman Iron Age with around 94 grave sites lies between the large stone grave and the tumulus . They are characterized by heterogeneous stone paving with a diameter of up to four meters and stone setting , which, in addition to small steles, probably served to mark the grave sites and to protect the clay pots. Occasionally the corpse burned in a small stone box. Mainly adults are buried in the urn grave field, mostly women whose urns lay under the stone paving.

Shallow grave

In the less densely populated part of the urn grave field, a shallow grave of the funnel beaker culture with a stone ax as a grave was found.
