Neolygus viridis

Neolygus viridis ( Syn .: Lygocoris viridis ) is a type of bug from the family of soft bugs (Miridae).

features

The bugs are 5.5 to 6.5 millimeters long. The species of the genus Neolygus are green and have an oval body, which is, however, less wide than that of Apolygus species. The spurs of the rails ( tibia ) are brown and arise from black points. The second antennae is longer than the pronotum is wide at the base. Neolygus viridis can be distinguished from the other species of the genus by the extensive black pattern on the clavus and corium of the hemielytras . The second antenna segment is darker at the tip. The bugs also look similar to Orthops campestris , but this species is smaller and has shorter antennae .

Occurrence and habitat

The species is distributed in Europe with the exception of the southern parts of the Mediterranean countries and east across Siberia to East Asia. It is widespread in Germany and Austria and is common in most places. Primarily semi-shady to open places with higher humidity, such as forest edges or floodplains, are populated, but the species can also be found on isolated park trees.

Way of life

The bugs live on deciduous trees; mainly on linden ( Tilia ), much less often on alder ( Alnus ), buckthorn ( Rhamnus ), willow ( Salix ), birch ( Betula ), maple ( Acer ) and hazel ( Corylus ). They suckle on the reproductive organs of plants, which is why they are only found on fertile plants. Sometimes you can see them suckling on aphids and leaf fleas , occasionally they even feed mainly predatory. The overwintering takes place as an egg. One generation is trained each year. The adult bugs appear from June, they die by September at the latest.
