The genus maskray belongs to the family of stingrays (Dasyatidae). The species of the genus live in the Indian Ocean between the Red Sea and the western edge of the Pacific . For a long time, their species were assigned to the stingrays ( Dasyatis ), but more recent investigations of the morphology and molecular composition led to the (re) segregation of the independent genus Neotrygon .

features

The species of the genus differ from other stingrays by a striking pattern around the eyes, reminiscent of a mask. In addition, they have an atypically short tail with pronounced fin folds on the top and bottom and a thread-thin tip.
