NerdStar (or NerdStarTV ) is a German-language internet television broadcaster of NerdStar UG (limited liability) based in Bielefeld . The station broadcasts its program at least four times a week via its own website and via the Twitch platform . A channel on YouTube is also operated under the same name . Since June 2017, NerdStar has had a broadcasting license from the State Agency for Media North Rhine-Westphalia (LfM for short).

history

The origins of NerdStar go back to a monthly format of the same name, initially designed by Marcel Menk as a media project , which was produced from 2011 to 2016 on Bielefelder Bürgerfernsehen Kanal 21 and broadcast on the nationwide TV learning channel NRWision . At the LfM Citizen Media Award 2013, NerdStar was awarded in the categories Jury Award: Citizens Groups - Best Format and Audience Award. From December 2013, regular live streams were added to the monthly pre-produced programs, which were initially broadcast on Hitbox.tv . A change to the live stream platform Twitch took place with the founding of NerdStar UG (limited liability) in January 2017, with the full start of broadcasting operations in February of the same year. Furthermore, NerdStar was also awarded the Federal Government- sponsored Kultur- und Kreativpiloten award in 2017 .

concept

NerdStar currently broadcasts a live program of several hours on Twitch and on its own website at least four days a week (currently Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays). In the broadcast formats topics and events from the fields of video games , board games , movies , series , as well as network and Nerdkultur addressed and dealt with. An important aspect here is the direct interaction with the viewers via the chat provided by Twitch as a return channel. On special occasions (tournaments, publication dates of video games, etc.), additional blocks of broadcasts (also on the other days) are inserted if necessary.

Current transmission formats

Toilet talk

In the toilet talk , Marcel Menk leads the audience every Monday in just under 60 minutes through highlights from the previous week, reports on important events related to NerdStar and the community and presents the program for the current week.

Retro monday

On retro Monday , video games will be presented and played on consoles of the 8-, 16- and 32-bit generation ( NES , Super NES , Sega Mega Drive , Sony PlayStation etc.) with changing moderators in a two-hour format.

Nerd stalgia

NerdStalgie is the station's retro magazine, moderated by Maximilian Vallee, which alternately shares the broadcasting slot together with Retro Monday. In contrast to the above-mentioned retro Monday, not only are individual tracks played live, but also thematically edited - enriched with pre-produced clips that describe an entire genre, for example.

Spawned

Spawned is a two-hour breakfast format that Dirk Ludewig moderates on Thursdays from 11 a.m. Recurring elements include the Twitch News , in which Ludewig reports on current events related to Twitch, or the Do Do Test Foundation , where, for example, extraordinary food is tried. Furthermore, current net cultural events are dealt with in this format.

Trash bash

In Trash Bash , Maximilian Vallee and Daniel Staubesandt present weekly games that have a very low or non-existent quality standard.

Unplugged

In Unplugged are board games and board games presented. The rules are explained to the audience in short introductions at the beginning. The games are then played live in front of the camera.

More broadcasts

If necessary, special programs will be set up for releases of important video game titles. In addition, NerdStar has recently looked after the broadcast of international events for the German-speaking area. Among other things, the German-language stream for the group phase of the Overwatch World Cup 2018 in Paris , organized by Blizzard Entertainment , was produced and broadcast by NerdStar, as was the Broadcaster Royale , a global tournament organized by Twitch , which was held in PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds .
