Cultural and creative pilots Germany is an award that the since 2010 on behalf Initiative Culture and Creative Industries of the Federal Government of 32 companies in the cultural and creative industries will be awarded. By the end of 2019, 320 companies had been recognized as “culture and creative pilots”.

Application process

Self-employed people , freelancers , artists , founders and companies with a cultural or creative business idea can apply for the title of “cultural and creative pilot”. After a pre-selection, up to 104 applicants are invited to interviews and present their project in talks with a jury. 32 of them are recognized as "Culture and Creative Pilots Germany".

The winners receive an award from the federal government and take part in a program that is geared towards exchange and networking. In personal discussions with mentors, they reflect on their entrepreneurial perspectives. Participants meet experts in workshops.

The organizer of the Kultur- und Kreativpiloten Deutschland award is the u-Institut in cooperation with the Federal Competence Center for Culture and Creative Industries. The sponsor is the Federal Government's Culture and Creative Industries Initiative, a project of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy and the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media. The “Culture and Creative Pilots” award is intended to strengthen the position of the culture and creative industries in Germany and to move the sector into the political and media focus.

The cultural and creative industries include all companies that are predominantly commercial and that deal with the creation, production, distribution and media dissemination of cultural / creative goods and services. This includes eleven sub-markets: the music industry, book market, art market, film industry, broadcasting industry, performing arts, design industry, architecture market, press market, advertising market and the software / games industry. In Germany, around 249,000 companies belong to the cultural and creative industries, which in 2014 generated total sales of 146.3 billion euros. 1.05 million people are employed in the industry.

The cultural and creative industries generate 2.3% of the total gross value added in Germany and are therefore ahead of the chemical industry and energy supply in an industry comparison.
