The original Unpacked GmbH is a German food retailer in Berlin's Kreuzberg district . It was one of the first non-packaging stores in Germany and was received worldwide as part of the zero-waste movement.
The time of foundation
Around 600 groceries, including oatmeal , pasta , muesli , honey , jam , fruit and cereal products, are sold without outer packaging. Products such as yogurt or milk are dispensed in deposit jars. For fresh meat products, a solution is currently being sought to offer them in compliance with food hygiene regulations.
Customers have the weight of their empty containers determined at the entrance and pay the weight of the products at the checkout.
Original Unverpackt was the first shop of its kind to be financed by crowdfunding. A total of 4,000 supporters contributed to a total of over € 108,000. This example was followed by eleven other crowdfunding campaigns for packaging-free shops.
The design comes from the architect Michael Brown from NAU Architects and received attention in the trade press for interior design and architecture.
Development since the foundation
After the initial euphoria, the interest of customers in the business idea seemed to have subsided somewhat. In March 2015, the store held 450 products that were bought by over 100 customers every day. In October 2015 the number increased again to 120 customers a day. The planned franchise system is on hold, but 38 additional stores based on the original Unpacked model have been opened in Germany; seven more are planned. The newly opened stores are spread all over Germany and are located in Bonn , Dresden , Heidelberg , Kiel , Mainz , Munich and Schwäbisch Gmünd . In Karlsruhe, the business concept was adopted with the establishment of the first unpackaged store in May 2016. Several organic chains are currently following the example of Original Unverpackt and offering departments with unpackaged goods.
In October 2019, Original Unverpackt opened a second store in Kreuzberg, Berlin.
