Perspective Daily is an online magazine that works on the principles of constructive journalism .
A single article appears per day, a total of five per week. In addition to the facts, these articles should also show possible solutions and encourage discussion. There is a comment function with clear rules that should ensure the constructiveness of the contributions. Perspective Daily is financed exclusively through its membership fees. The first 12,000 annual memberships were won through a crowdfunding campaign, and Perspective Daily claims that it now has over 14,000 members. The first article appeared on June 21, 2016. The editorial office is located in Münster. In 2017 Perspective Daily was nominated for the Grimme Online Prize.
The two founders Maren Urner and Han Langeslag want to pursue scientifically sound journalism. It is therefore important that the authors not only have journalistic qualifications but also a scientific education or long work experience.
history
Perspective Daily was founded by Maren Urner and Han Langeslag in December 2015. Maren Urner describes the basic motivation of the two neuroscientists as follows: “(...) [W] e thought about the question of where we get information from on a daily basis. And we asked ourselves why all those who work on solutions every day are so rarely found on page 1. We wondered why individual events preferentially land there, but not the really urgent problems of humanity. We want to do that differently. "
On June 26, 2015, Maren Urner held a TEDx talk “What neuroscience and journalism have to do with a better future” and advocates solution-oriented journalism: “This journalism doesn't stop with the explanation of problems, but it also shows the solutions that are either already implemented or discussed ".
After the crowdfunding campaign was successfully completed on March 28, 2016, the interdisciplinary team behind Perspective Daily created the website within just under three months and launched the first article on June 21.
Co-founder Bernhard Eickenberg left the team on July 24, 2016.
On December 2nd, 2016 Perspective Daily took part in the first international conference for Constructive Journalism in Windesheim in the Netherlands. Perspective Daily was represented at the re: publica & Media Convention in Berlin in 2017 .
Co-founder Maren Urner left Perspective Daily on April 1, 2019 and has been teaching media psychology at the University of Media, Communication and Business since then.
Journalistic self-image
- "We see constructive journalism as an opportunity to give people fun in journalism again," says Maren Urner, who is not only a doctor of neuroscientists , but also has experience with the Neue Westfälische Zeitung.
The stated goal is to empower readers to act by showing them solutions.
The topics should be better "classified" and reports should be "more complete". This is to be achieved by presenting the topics in context. Possible solutions should be compared and asked how the future might look. More important than finished results is the initiation of a discussion on social issues. The principle should always apply that journalists remain critical external observers and must not become ambassadors for an idea.
Several studies have found that negative stories make readers more anxious and in a bad mood. And the sadder, more anxious or depressed people feel, the less likely it is that they will be willing to donate, act more environmentally friendly, or share their views with others.
The articles are written by an editorial team of eleven and by guest authors. In contrast to many other media, all sources should be named and linked in the text, which should contribute to greater transparency.
role models
The model is the Dutch online magazine De Correspondent , which was founded in 2013 by the Dutch journalist and philosopher Rob Wijnberg.
The public service broadcaster DR in Denmark is also committed to constructive journalism. In England there is the Positive News portal and The New Day newspaper .
The online magazine Krautreporter, also financed by crowdfunding, has been on the market since autumn 2014 , in which the scientific foundation of the articles is less of a focus.
Awards
In 2015 Perspective Daily was recognized as a culture and creative pilot . The award is given by the federal government.
The German Council for Sustainable Development awarded Perspective Daily with the Werkstatt-N -sustainability seal in 2016 and writes: “Perspective Daily is an advertising-free online medium that reports on problems AND solutions in the context of solution-oriented journalism. This gives people a more realistic view of the world and they are encouraged to become active themselves. A central aspect of Perspective Daily is the comprehensible explanation of complex contexts combined with scientifically sound research. ”In 2017, Perspective Daily was awarded the Werkstatt-N sustainability seal.
Perspective Daily is nominated for the Grimme Online Award 2017 in the category Knowledge and Education . The announcement of the nominations states: "The humorous is not the thing of" Perspective Daily ", but perhaps the hopeful that is in every constructive proposal: In the editorial office of the online magazine, scientists from different disciplines meet and work together on topics and media implementation. And at the end there is always a problem-solving approach, a constructive perspective. If that doesn't give hope ?! "
Prominent supporters
During the crowdfunding phase, the moderator Klaas Heufer-Umlauf , the ex-soccer player and ARD commentator Mehmet Scholl , the actress Nora Tschirner , Gesine Schwan , Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker , Eckart von Hirschhausen and the publicist Franz Alt promoted Perspective Daily.
Guest authors regularly publish at Perspective Daily: For example, Alexander Sängerlaub , founder of Kater Demos , writes about how the media can maintain their task of independent reporting in the face of financial scarcity. A guest contribution by political scientist Dirk Messner discusses three different models of world order. Grame Maxton, General Secretary of the Club of Rome, argues in his article in favor of distributing central bank money not to commercial banks but to poor sections of the population. The activist and journalist Raúl Krauthausen and the editor Susanne Bauer report on how the disabled movement has influenced the new federal participation law. The editor-in-chief of the business magazine Capital Horst von Buttlar shows the reader three different perspectives on the political situation in Germany. The computer science professor Hans Josef Radermacher describes in another guest article what a Marshall Plan for Africa could look like.
financing
Perspective Daily was supported from August 2015 to July 2016 with an EXIST start-up grant from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy . A ten-week crowdfunding campaign was successfully completed in March 2016 . The target was 12,000 paying members (42 euros each) and thus 500,000 euros. By June 2016, the number of subscribers (according to the media company) should have grown to more than 14,000. This model is intended to enable Perspective Daily to forego any advertising.
Pay model
Some articles on the website can be called up free of charge for every user. In order to be able to read all the articles and participate in the discussions, the reader must take out an annual subscription. In addition, a “permeable” paywall process allows articles to B. can be shared in social networks or via a sent link and thus the range can be increased. Individual articles are also published publicly. Since the beginning of July 2016, interested parties can register on an e-mail list so that they can read one article per week for free.
criticism
The first article dealt with the ideas from the book Blood Oil by the English philosophy professor Leif Wenar. According to the judgment of the online service Meedia, the online magazine's claim to provide a coherent solution is not recognizable . The second article was dedicated to the CuveWaters development project in Namibia, in which solutions were successfully researched and tested to counter the water scarcity in southern Africa. The article owes an answer to the question of whether the project will be continued, so the criticism of Meedia. Immediately before the new elections in Spain, the third article dealt with participatory democracy , for which the Podemos party stands. “Worth reading and knowing” is the verdict on this article.
The industry service of the communications industry, Kressreport , is impressed by the approach to give science and scientists more public weight. [Scientists] “move the world more than politicians, they change people's lives more than most people even suspect, they usually do a lot of good, but they remain in the shadow of the media and only come into the light of the Nobel Prize Headlights. ”The author Paul-Josef Raue was not yet satisfied with the first articles:“ If you judge them by the self-imposed standards, half fail: no research, weak solutions, but a lot of passion to save the world in three thousand words . "
The ARD media magazine Zapp describes Perspective Daily as "a mixture of facts, facts, facts and activism". The report criticizes the scientific nature of the articles: “Many articles are long, very scientific and complex; even if they advertise "intelligibility". "
