The Nesselbach , also Nestelbach or Steinberger Bach called, is a river in the 19th Vienna district Döbling .

geography

The Nesselbach rises in Grinzing between Latisberg and Vogelsangberg in several sources near the waymark Bei der Kreuzeiche . The stream initially flows in a deeply cut valley in a north-easterly direction, passes the Wiener Höhenstraße and a little later flows into a large basin above the Wagenwiese, whose overflow flows into the following stream channel . Originally, the Bach followed the course of the next in earlier times Cobenzelgasse and united at the intersection with the sky Street with the travel mountain stream . Then the brook continued to flow through Heiligenstadt and flowed into the Danube Canal . Today the water of the Nesselbach is directed over the Bachkanal into the right collecting channel of the Danube Canal.

history

The name of the stream comes from the stinging nettles that once abounded on the bank . The name Steinbergerbach, however, comes from the Grinzing quarry. On a map from 1901 the course of the brook was marked as open until shortly before Grinzing, older maps still show the connection of the brook with the Reisenbergbach. From here on, the stream was also referred to as Kirchenbach (church stream in 1339 ) due to its proximity to St. Martin's Church.

The Nesselbach basin, which was built between 1900 and 1903, was renovated and modernized between 2016 and 2018. The stone wall was partially torn down and replaced by a higher reinforced concrete wall, which increased the capacity from 1600 to 5800 cubic meters.
