The residents of the original village of Leibis were relocated here in 1994 due to the construction of the Leibis-Lichte dam , near the Mankenbachsmühle below Unterweißbach. One of the residents resisted the resettlement until 1999. The old village of Leibis is 90 meters below the water level at the bottom of the dam.

Story of Leibis

Leibis was first mentioned in a document on December 21, 1386. A hammer mill was built in 1465. The forest industry and the timber industry increased. It was not until the late 17th century that charcoal burners, Harzscharrer and forest workers settled down with their families. At that time there were twelve houses with about 60 residents. In 1865 the hammer mill was shut down. Until 1918 the place belonged to the sovereignty of the Principality of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt .

In 1920 Leibis advanced as a resort . 196 people lived in the village in 1933. After the Second World War , one hundred workers worked in the sawmill . There was also a paper mill and a box factory. In 1965 the Leibisians celebrated the 500th anniversary of their village. 13 years later the discussion about resettlement began .
