The emergence of New Venice goes back to the year 1890. In that year the manor Rahnsdorf was sold and acquired together with Gut Hessenwinkel by the city administration of the then independent city of Köpenick , which in 1920 became the 16th administrative district of Berlin .

The lands of the Rahnsdorf estate at that time also included the marshy Spree meadows, a drainage area of the Spree, below the manor house. In 1925, the building authority in Köpenick created a development plan for part of the Spreewiesen, which consequently was drained through canals from 1926 onwards. The area was initially called "New Cameroon". In the course of the work, however, it was renamed New Venice. Finally, a five kilometer long canal system was excavated, which flows around six islands and has nine car and three pedestrian bridges.

In 1928 the Neue Rahnsdorfer Terrain-Actiengesellschaft was commissioned to sell the 374 water properties. The plots were sold from 600 square meters for 3.50  marks per square meter and are now privately owned. From 1933 to 1935, the paths were increased by around one meter by excavating the Gosen Canal, which was under construction . Due to the boggy subsoil of the former Spree meadows, the gravel paths are not paved even today.

New Venice is now enclosed by the lagoon path in the east and the Rialtoring in the south and west. The Rialtoring runs over four bridges and takes its name from the Rialto Bridge in Venice . In the interior of New Venice no permanent right of residence can be obtained to this day, since the land as flood areas protect the capital Berlin from flooding and can be flooded in an emergency. New Venice recorded the highest flood to date in 1947. It was caused because the water from Berlin's Mühlendamm lock backed up up the Spree. The lock was temporarily inoperable as a result of the Second World War . The highest water level was measured in New Venice at 74 centimeters - all banks and houses on the flat plots were flooded and only the streets looked out from the floods.
