history

Around 1850 some of the scattered German settlers who came to New Zealand with the Sankt Pauli in 1843 and with the Skjold in 1844 returned after setbacks such as the Wairau tumult , severe flooding in the Sankt Paulidorf founded a year earlier and the bankruptcy of the New Zealand Company , which had sponsored the settlement of the area, back to the area around today's Upper Moutere . Together with other newcomers from Germany, they settled the area. They founded the village of Sarau, which was renamed Upper Moutere in 1915 , as well as the smaller settlements Rosental , now called Rosedale and Neudorf.
