In 1958 the Neue Gymnasium Oldenburg (abbreviation NGO ) was founded near the horse market and downtown Oldenburg as a modern-language high school within the Alexanderstraße school center. The first headmaster was Heinz Pfeiffer. The current headmaster is Carsten Willms.

The NGO is a general education, public high school for boys and girls from grades 5 to 13. The NGO is attended by an average of 1000 pupils per school year, who are taught by around 80 teachers. Years 5 to 9 consist of four classes. In year 10 there is another class, so this is five classes. Years 12 and 13 are taught in basic and examination courses and courses at an advanced level.

Six foreign languages ​​can be chosen in different combinations: English , French , Russian , Latin , Dutch , Greek and Spanish . English-bilingual lessons are offered from grade 6. Depending on the grade, sports , geography , music or history are taught in English. The NGO is the only school in the Weser-Ems district to offer Russian as a second compulsory foreign language. A Russian evening once a year proves the diverse results of Russian lessons.

Furthermore, since the school year 2008/2009, a basic course “Performing Games” has been offered for the 10th and 11th grades as a substitute for art or music or as an optional subject.

International partnerships exist with Cholet ( France ), Voronezh ( Russia ), Groningen ( Netherlands ) and Valencia ( Spain ).

Lessons take place in many classrooms and specialist rooms, while science subjects are taught in well-equipped and recently renovated rooms.

There are many projects and working groups at the New Gymnasium. a. the project “Socrates Comenius”. Project days lasting several days take place every year. Years ago the library “BiNGO” (library in the NGO) was set up.

Traditionally, numerous events such as the “NGO Promenade”, the “Literature Café” or various concerts are offered every school year.

In 2011 the new cafeteria building was opened, which also houses a computer room and a geography room.
