The village of Neurath is located on the edge of the Middle Rhine Valley above the city of Bacharach and is one of the smaller districts of this municipality.

location

Neurath is located southwest of Stahleck Castle and at the foot of the Rabenkopf ( 395  m above sea  level ) at a height of 240 m on the left plateau of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley at the eastern end of the Hunsrück . The town is connected to the main town, one kilometer north on the banks of the Rhine, by district road 24 Bacharach– Manubach . The Neurath area is used for viticulture and agriculture, and part of it is forested.

The townscape is characterized by the community baking house ( Backes ), which is still used today - for example at the village festival or pizza baking - by the Lenneplatz with its large oak tree, as well as by the relatively young village community center and some fountains.

Neurath also includes the Rheinblickhof, Schloßberg, Burg and Haus residential areas .

history

Section of the old Roman road on the Kühlberg.

The history of Neurath is closely linked to the city of Bacharach due to its proximity. The place, which appears in written records for the first time in 1231, is located directly next to an originally Roman connection path to the Hunsrück, a remaining section of which is still preserved.

In the Middle Ages, Neurath was initially owned by the Archbishops of Cologne. The district is mentioned in a document from 1348. At that time, a certain Silvert zu Bacharach in the Oberdorf came into the possession of a house, which he received from the Church of St. Apostles in Cologne for five schillings of hereditary interest.

According to a Bacharach Oberamtsbeschreibung from 1669, the residents of Neurath had the same civil rights as citizens of the city of Bacharach, u. a. Free tapping of wine, but in return also the same obligations as making a contribution to the Bacharach city fortifications.

Neurath belonged to the fourth valleys , whose inhabitants had special privileges with Bacharach as a suburb. The place also belonged to Bacharach in church. From 1541, the Wittelsbachers of the Electoral Palatinate reformed their quarter valleys around Bacharach on the Middle Rhine (communities in the Koblenz church district). Since then they have been predominantly Protestant.

After the end of feudal rule , Neurath belonged to the Mairie and canton of Bacharach in the Département de Rhin-et-Moselle during the French period , then to Prussia , and became part of the Rhine province , district of Sankt Goar . In 1817 Neurath finally became a part of the city of Bacharach.

In the founding phase of the Federal Republic, the southern half of the Rhine Province, and with it Neurath, part of the newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate , initially continued to belong to the St. Goar district. When it was dissolved on June 7, 1969, the region around Bacharach was added to the new Mainz-Bingen district.

On July 16, 2002, the Working Group Beautiful Neurath (today: Active Neurath) was founded in order to work together for their own place. The largest single project so far was the renovation of the new village community center in-house.

Surname

Over the centuries the place name varied several times - after the first mention in 1231 as Nuerot / Neurot there are still: 1260 de Nuwerode; 1263 from Nauroede; 1273 de Nuwenruden; 1326 Nurod; 1335 in Naurath; 1463 Nuraidt / Nurad; 1669 Naret / Nahroth; 1669/78 Naroth. The place name is derived from Middle High German niuwe / nûwe = new and -rod = clearing.

economy

Besides agriculture and viticulture , tourism is important today.

politics

Neurath is designated as a local district and therefore has a local advisory board and a local director . The local council consists of five local council members who were elected by majority vote in the local elections on May 26, 2019 . The mayor, Manuela Mades, was re-elected in the local elections with 74.70% of the vote.

leisure

Neurath is located directly on the Rheingoldstrasse, which runs over the left Rhine heights . The Rheinburgenweg , which runs past the village, is ideal for hikers . It is not only from here that views of the Rhine landscape and the Binger Forest open up again and again.
