Neuwiedia griffithii is a kind of the genus Neuwiedia in the family of orchid (Orchidaceae). The herbaceous plants come from Southeast Asia.

description

Neuwiedia griffithii grows to 25 to 60 cm, the shoot is upright or ascending. The roots have a diameter of 2 to 3 mm, they are occasionally hairy, the longest hairs on the roots are 1 to 1.3 mm long. The leaves are oblong-oval to broadly linear, tapering to a point at the end. The smallest leaves measure 6 cm long by 3.3 cm wide, they can be up to 32 cm long and 5 cm wide. There are nine to 37 leaf veins, seven of which are clearly visible. The upper leaves can be hairy, with the hairs on the leaf margin and occasionally on the leaf blade. The hairs on the leaves have different lengths, the longest measuring 0.25 to 0.35 mm.

The inflorescence is a terminal raceme , it becomes 4.5 to 15 cm long and thus remains shorter than the leaves. Flowering plants were found in all seasons. An inflorescence contains 40 to 50, rarely up to 65 flowers . They are 13 to 17 mm in size, their color is white, rarely yellow, with green tips. Inflorescence axis, bracts and petals are hairy. The bracts are oval, lanceolate or linear, they end pointed, their length is 13 to 20 mm, the width 0.5 to 6 mm. The flower stalk is 3 mm long and 0.8 to 1 mm in diameter. The oval ovary measures 5 mm length at 2 to 3 mm in diameter, in cross section, it is approximately triangular with distinct longitudinal strips. The petals are all quite similar, but there is a very slight differentiation between the two lateral and central petals of a circle. The sepals are hairy on the outside, lanceolate in shape, the two lateral ones are 7.7 to 8.5 mm long and 2 to 3.5 mm wide. The third sepal is slightly narrower at 2 to 3 mm. The petals are provided with a longitudinal keel on the outside, this is hairy. The two sides are elongated, 7.7 to 8.5 mm long and 2.5 to 4.5 mm wide. The middle petal, the lip , is hardly different, it is elliptical in shape and, at 3 to 5 mm, slightly wider than the other two inner petals. All petals have a small, 0.4 to 0.8 mm long attached tip, which is smaller on the petals than on the sepals. The column consists of three stamens and the stylus , the mm over a length of 1 to 2, fused together at the bottom. The free part of the stamen is flattened in cross-section, it measures 1 to 1.3 mm in length for the two lateral stamens and 1 mm in length for the middle stamen. The anthers are elongated, the lateral 2 to 3 mm long, the middle 2 to 3.5 mm long. The width of all stamens is 1 to 1.5 mm. The free part of the stylus measures 5 to 6 mm in length and thus protrudes over the stamens. The scar is round, with a diameter of 0.5 mm it is only slightly wider than the stylus, which has a diameter of 0.3 to 0.4 mm. The fruit is a thin-walled capsule that opens when ripe, roughly triangular in cross-section, with longitudinal ridges on the edges, the surfaces in between with a longitudinal groove. The seeds consist of a rounded central part and two broad appendages.

Occurrence

Neuwiedia griffithii grows on Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula. The plants occur from sea level up to a height of about 150 m. The locations are in untouched and disturbed forests as well as in swamps and on watercourses. Averyanov reported occurrences in Vietnam, but in a more recent publication he classifies these plants as Neuwiedia Zollingeri var. Balansae . Neuwiedia zollingeri var. Balansae is seen as a synonym for Neuwiedia zollingeri var. Singapureana .

Systematics and botanical history

Neuwiedia griffithii was first described by Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach in 1874 .
